Self- Control: A Lesson from Cookie Monster.

Sesame Street is teaching our kids, is’t it time we learned this too. Self- Regulation is on the bottom of the list of character traits for most the western world. I am definitely among those in that calculation. It is still a Strength we use it sometimes otherwise this world would be really messed up. Character strengths can be developed and I know that is my goal to increase my self-regulation.

What is more important as a parent is a parents self- regulation is a huge part of a child’s wellbeing. Our children need us to be disciplined. Our children are our greatest gift and responsibility. They do not do what we tell them, they do what they see us model. ~ Live your strengths, develop your strengths, develop children who develop their strengths. It is a decision we make minute by minute ~ Katrina

SAME ‘OL SAME ‘OL OR A BRAND NEW YOU?

2016 has come and gone and the time has arrived to evaluate the successes, blessings, and challenges that came with it.

Personally, our family was blessed with health and happiness. This year has been very busy but we were able to attend many family celebrations and create a few new traditions.

Professionally, the most exciting thing that has happened this year was my enrollment into CAPP24 Dallas(Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology). I am also completing a program to facilitate Resilience Training. Both programs are through the Flourishing Center.  I have been dreaming, planning, and praying for the opportunity and ability to attend this course for a couple of years.

Dreams remain dreams until you step out in faith and take action. Often people hope for a better life, year, career, relationship. Hope requires no action on your part. It’s like a wish that you make when you blow out your birthday candles that rarely come true.

2017 will look like 2016 without the drive, determination, and dedication to make daily decisions that move you closer to your ideal life.

Consider these things when looking ahead to a successful future you in 2017. First, you must Discover what success looks like to you. See it! Feel it! Breathe it in! Live it out! Think ahead one year. You have reached the goals that you set. What does it feel like to have accomplished these goals? What did you do to get there?

Second, Determine your why. Next, ask yourself these questions to connect with your why. How will it change your life? How will it change the life of others? Do you need it? If so, how much? What will be lost if you don’t have it? Is it worth the effort, time, or money to reach this success goal? This step helps you stay on track and keeps you motivated. When you are clear on your why determined the importance and the interest it is easier to keep on track. Next, you must Disarm the fear. The only thing between your success and your failure is you. Fear is what holds you back from achieving success. Learn the language to talk back to that fear and disarm the limiting beliefs caused by that fear. Finally, to create 2017 with your personal version of success.

Next, you must Disarm the fear. The only thing between your success and your failure is you. Fear is what holds you back from achieving success. Learn the language to talk back to that fear and disarm the limiting beliefs caused by that fear. Not every thought is true. Many thoughts come into our head each day. We have no control over that fact. What do we have control over is how long we entertain those thoughts.  Often the thoughts we have do not serve us well. If it doesn’t move you forward it is holding you back.

Finally, to create 2017 with your personal version of success.  Develop the how, The how comes in two phases. The first is how you choose to verbalize your success plan. This might be the most important part of this whole process. This is very important so lean in. List what you want to add to 2017 not what you want to take away. Instead of saying to want to “lose weight” reframe the statement to .. ” be healthier”. It just feels better to say it and it changes the focus to a positive outcome. Let’s try another one. I want to “get rid of clutter” let’s change that to I want to “be more organized”. Avoid negative phrases or words like I want to stop eating ice cream. Your brain doesn’t compute in negatives so every time you say it “stop” is removed and your brain thinks “eat ice cream”.   Lastly, use and Develop the truest part of who you are to reach your success. You are amazingly gifted and talented, but even beyond that are the character strengths. Character strengths are how you show up in the world. Use your top 5 character strengths to reach success in the new year. Lastly, use and Develop the truest part of who you are to reach your success. You are amazingly gifted and talented, but even beyond that are the character strengths. Character strengths are how you show up in the world. Use your top 5 character strengths to reach success in the new year.

Essentially, you are the Driver of your success. If you change nothing. Nothing will change for you in 2017.  To recap, there are several steps that will help you reach the success that you desire in 2017. Discover the dream, Determine your why, Disarm your fears, Develop the tools inside of you to achieve your personal and professional success. And finally,  Dedicate the time, energy, and money to Drive you daily in the direction of that success. This is your Year! -Katrina Goff, CAPP24 Dallas, PS3 Coaching

Conflict: Is it What Ails You Or Heals You?

Conflict is inevitable how we handle it is what makes the difference. Are you using conflict an a means to strengthen your relationship or will you allow it to be the festering infection destroys it? Conflict isn’t a bad thing. Conflict can bring empathy, awareness, and even deepened connectivity. Conflict is a form of intimacy in which you allow yourself to be vulnerable enough to share your thoughts and the reasons behind those thoughts.

Think about the last conflict you at with your children, your spouse, at work. How comfortable are you with your reaction to that conflict? Did your respond in a way that Strengthened your relationship/S or did your reactions create division?

If you are unhappy with your action I have great news for you. Resilience is a mindset and a skillset that can be taught and developed. In resilience training you will learn these skillset that are essential for handling conflict and so much more. Message me for details about Resilience Training coming soon to Springfield and Beyond. – Katrina
